OpenDNS Leaves Data Handling Decisions to Customers; New Option Marks First Time Individuals Have the Option to Halt Data Collection

Revamped Admin Dashboard Gives Greater Insight, Lets Customers Opt Out of Data Collection

Jul 23, 2007 — SAN FRANCISCO -- OpenDNS, the award-winning DNS provider that makes the Internet safer, faster, smarter and more reliable, today announced it is the first Web services company to give its customers decision making power over how data about their network, collected by OpenDNS, is handled. In parallel with a complete overhaul to the OpenDNS account dashboard aimed at providing detailed network insights for administrators, the company will give its customers the option to stop data collection and delete all historical data collected relating to their account. OpenDNS collects DNS data only to give network administrators insight into the DNS on their network. The DNS data optionally collected by OpenDNS, and traditionally by Internet Service Providers, details domains visited on the network registered in the OpenDNS account.

The announcement comes in the midst of mounting public concern over the selling and handling of data about individuals and network’s online activities and behaviors. OpenDNS, the world’s largest and fastest-growing DNS provider, is fully committed to never sell or rent any data associated with its customers. If individuals and network administrators do not want their ISP or any other party to have access to their DNS data, they are encouraged to switch to OpenDNS and disable data collection.

“OpenDNS aims to make our customers’ Internet experience better in everything we do. We consider data about your network to belong to you and OpenDNS never has, nor ever will, sell or otherwise share your network data,” said OpenDNS Chief Executive Officer David Ulevitch. “Giving people the option to halt data collection means our customers can navigate the Internet better, free of the concern that their personally identifying information is being stored or shared with third parties.”

For those customers choosing to enable OpenDNS data collection, the new OpenDNS account dashboard provides detailed charts and stats about DNS activity on their network. The improved reporting makes network administrators better equipped to see trends and act accordingly, and OpenDNS’ 100 percent overall uptime means they can eliminate DNS as a problem source when troubleshooting.
